27th Annual General Meeting of Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC) Held

KARACHI, Dec 04 (NNI): The condition of jails in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa presents the worst picture as the number of prisoners detained in these facilities has far exceeded their capacity limit.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, there are six central, eight district and 24 sub-jails. The total number of prisoners who can be detained in these jails is 13,076. But, currently, there are 14,430 prisoners imprisoned in the jails of the province.
On the other hand, there are as many as 10,360 additional prisoners in the jails of Sindh that have crossed the capacity limit of jails. The capacity limit to keeping prisoners in the jails of Sindh is 13,538. Whereas, there are currently 23,898 prisoners inside the jails of the province.
Three new jails are being built in Sindh but despite their construction, there would still be more prisoners in the jails than the capacity limit. These three jails are being built in Malir, Thatha and Shaheed Benazirabad. It is worth mentioning here that more than Rs1,606 million rupees have been allocated to improve the condition of jails in the province.
