ISLAMABAD: In a joint effort to address the aftermath of the 2022 floods in Pakistan, the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation & Development (BMZ) has pledged EUR 12 million through KfW Development Bank for flood recovery and reconstruction. Partnering with the World Bank, UNDP will contribute to the effective implementation of Pakistan’s Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework (4RF) over the next three years.
Under the Flood Reconstruction and Coordination Programme, funded by Germany, emphasis will be placed on an expedited and integrated execution of 4RF, including the reconstruction of houses in Balochistan. KfW Country Director, Mr. Sebastian Jacobi, highlighted the significance of this initiative, expressing pride in KfW’s ongoing investment of EUR 50 million in flood recovery, reconstruction, and social protection in Pakistan.
UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative, Dr. Samuel Rizk, emphasized the critical nature of the partnership, blending international expertise with local knowledge to address challenges post-2022 floods. Dr. Najy Benhassine, the World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, underscored the importance of directing funds transparently to the most vulnerable communities and households.
The collaboration stems from the devastating impact of the 2022 floods, which affected 33 million people, claimed 1,700 lives, displaced 8 million individuals, and pushed 9 million into extreme poverty. The joint commitment of the Government of Germany, UNDP, and the World Bank reflects a sustained effort to tackle Pakistan’s post-flood challenges and facilitate recovery for affected regions.
