LAHORE: The principal of Lahore’s esteemed Aitchison College, Michael A. Thompson, tendered his resignation, attributing it to what he described as prejudiced actions by the Governor House, particularly regarding tuition fee waivers for Federal Minister Ahad Cheema’s two sons. Thompson’s departure sheds light on a history of political pressure, including previous attempts to resign and visa revocation allegedly stemming from conflicts with influential figures. Minister Ahad Cheema defended the governor’s directive, portraying it as a general policy, while Information Minister Attaullah Tarar clarified that Cheema’s children hadn’t attended the college for three years, justifying the fee waiver. However, Federal Information Minister has contacted the college principal and demanded to withdraw his resignation.
Principal Thompson’s resignation underscores allegations of political meddling, notably concerning tuition fee waivers for Minister Ahad Cheema’s sons.
Thompson’s departure unveils a pattern of political pressure, including prior attempts to resign and visa revocation reportedly linked to conflicts with influential individuals.
Minister Ahad Cheema defends the governor’s decision, framing it as a standard policy, while Information Minister Attaullah Tarar explains that Cheema’s children hadn’t been enrolled at the college for three years, justifying the fee waiver legally.
Thompson emphasizes the detrimental impact of political interference on the institution’s governance and integrity, highlighting the need to uphold educational standards free from external influence.
Minister Ahad Cheema asserts that the principal approached him privately to resolve the matter regarding his children, which he declined, advocating for a merit-based discussion.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar clarifies that Cheema’s children hadn’t attended the college for three years, aligning with legal provisions for fee waivers in such cases.
This scandal underscores the precarious intersection of politics and education, prompting reflections on governance and accountability within educational institutions.
