ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) officials on Friday told the Standing Committee on the Cabinet Secretariat of the National Assembly that the rehabilitation of flood-damaged infrastructure is a major challenge.
The meeting of the National Assembly standing committee on cabinet secretariat was chaired by Kishwer Zehra. In the meeting, NDMA officials while providing information about the floods said the rain-affected area so far is 5.2 million acres and as of September 28, 720,000 people have been rescued, while 1,666 people have lost their lives including 615 children.
While 12,664 injured, out of which 8,422 people have been injured in Sindh province. While 13,073 km of roads were affected across the country and 410 bridges were destroyed and 105 small dams were damaged across the country.
Moreover, 2 million houses were affected and 973,000 cattle were affected across the country. Diarrhea, cholera, and skin diseases are now rampant, while fever and malaria drugs are in short supply.
Additionally, in the committee, the matter related to the deaths of five brothers trapped in Kohistan, was also raised. Committee member Muhammad Abubakar raised the issue and said that five brothers marooned in Kohistan due to a flood were waiting for help and the incident has damaged the reputation of the country.
NDMA officials said there was widespread destruction and restoring the damaged infrastructure was a major challenge, with the damage survey to be completed by October 15, while the disease of gastroenteritis in the flood-stricken areas has been spread.
