Hyderabad: Pro Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Dr. Jan Muhammad Marri said that the share of the agriculture sector in the country’s GDP is 18%, in which share of agriculture is 40%, while the share of livestock reaches 60%, so the indigenous and local breeds of cattle should be saved from extinction, he was addressing the opening ceremony of five days training on “Bovine Reproduction and Artificial Insemination” under the auspices of the Department of Animal Reproduction of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, in collaboration with the National Center for Livestock Breeding, Genetics and Genomics and Pir Meher Ali Shah Aird Agriculture University Rawalpindi.
Dr. Marri said that cattle are a source of cultural identity along with our agricultural and economic development; experts should rely on modern technology to increase meat and milk production in cattle
Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Dr. Mohammad Ghiyasuddin Shah Rashidi said that developed countries are saving their rare breeds through artificial breeding technology. Veterinary experts should play their role to bring this technology to the common farmers and residents of Sindh.
Prof. Dr. Prashotham Khatri said that the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences of the University has the projects, resources, and technology for the breeding of indigenous species and genetic modification of animals, He said that our cow gives only 5 kg of milk but through artificial insemination, a local breed cow can give 15 kg of milk.
Project Coordinator Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Waheed said there is an urgent need to breed animals and save their rare species through modern technology. In this regard, experts will have to cooperate with their modern research.
Prof. Aqeel Ahmed Memon, Prof. Saeed Ahmed Soomro, Prof. Nazar Korejo, and others said that after agriculture, livestock is the second major source of income, and the livestock sector is also contributing to poverty alleviation, while Sindh Agriculture University is establishing its center and technical lab in this regard.
