ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khanniazi has delivered a powerful message on the occasion of World Environment Day, which is observed on June 5th each year. Recognized under the United Nations Environment Programme, World Environment Day aims to raise awareness about environmental challenges and the need to protect our natural surroundings.
This year, the theme for World Environment Day is “Solutions to Plastic Pollution.” Admiral Khanniazi highlights the urgency of addressing the global plastic crisis, emphasizing that more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, with half of it designed for single-use purposes. Shockingly, less than 10% of plastic is recycled, leading to an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending up in lakes, rivers, and oceans. This widespread plastic pollution poses a grave threat to the planet, as it contaminates landfills, leaches into the ocean, and releases toxic smoke when incinerated. Furthermore, microplastics have infiltrated the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe, endangering human health.
In light of these challenges, the Pakistan Navy (PN) is actively celebrating World Environment Day to raise awareness among its personnel and promote actions to mitigate environmental degradation. The PN has implemented various initiatives, including solid waste collection from harbors, the establishment of Reedbed plants in its jurisdictions, and extensive tree plantation campaigns.
Moreover, the PN is engaged in sensitizing relevant government and non-government organizations and departments to take effective measures against marine pollution. While awareness is crucial, the PN emphasizes the need for practical steps and instills a sense of responsibility among all its units and personnel to preserve and protect the environment. Admiral Khanniazi expects dedicated efforts from all under his command to make these activities meaningful and impactful.
Admiral Khanniazi calls on everyone to reaffirm their commitment to ensuring a cleaner and safer environment that directly impacts the quality of life. He urges the industrial community to embrace best practices and principles to collaborate in finding practical solutions to plastic pollution.
With his message on World Environment Day 2023, Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khanniazi emphasizes the need for collective action to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution and protect our environment for future generations.
