ISLAMABAD: Zaheer Ahmed, a Pakistani law enforcement officer, was honored with the prestigious Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Hero award by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during an award ceremony held in Washington, DC on June 15. The annual award aims to draw global attention to the fight against human trafficking. Zaheer Ahmed, a former director of the Federal Investigative Agency’s Anti-Human Smuggling Unit, has displayed unwavering commitment to combat human trafficking in all its forms. Within Pakistan, he actively raised awareness about this pervasive issue, particularly emphasizing its disproportionate impact on the country’s most vulnerable citizens. Through his resolute dedication and innovative approach, Ahmed successfully fostered collaboration between Pakistani law enforcement agencies and civil society, resulting in enhanced recognition of TIP and improved identification of its victims.

As the director of the FIA’s Anti-Human Smuggling Unit, Ahmed spearheaded numerous training and capacity building initiatives for law enforcement agencies, social welfare organizations, and other partners, focusing on prevention, identification, and assistance in TIP cases. He also engaged with local and international advocacy groups, forming strategic partnerships and fostering a united front against human trafficking. His relentless efforts played a pivotal role in influencing policy reforms and strengthening legal frameworks in Pakistan, culminating in the country’s ratification of the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons in 2022.

Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the award, Ahmed acknowledged the collaborative efforts of his colleagues, stating, “This award is a testament to the resilience and strength of our teamwork. I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition, and I will continue to fight alongside my peers until human trafficking is eradicated from our world.”

The TIP Report Hero award celebrates the exceptional contributions of individuals like Ahmed, whose dedication and determination serve as an inspiration for others. Ahmed’s unwavering commitment to the cause has earned him the respect and admiration of his peers. He will now embark on an International Visitor Leadership Program tour of the United States, where he will have the opportunity to meet and learn from fellow leaders in the fight against human trafficking.
