ISLAMABAD: In a significant move, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an increase in the Ramadan relief package size from Rs. 7.5 billion to Rs. 12.5 billion. The expansion aims to widen the scope of assistance during the holy month, including the provision of essential food items through mobile units, in addition to utility stores and the Benazir Income Support Program.
The directive emphasizes reaching as many impoverished and deserving individuals as possible, with the establishment of 1200 mobile points and 300 permanent relief centers. These centers will offer subsidized food and drink items, ensuring accessibility to those in need. Modern technology, such as GPS, will aid in determining delivery locations, while a dedicated mobile app and instructional videos will guide beneficiaries in utilizing the services effectively. Furthermore, a digital dashboard is under development to monitor flour distribution in real-time, ensuring transparency and accountability in the process.

Initially announced on March 7, 2024, the Ramadan relief package, with a subsidy of Rs. 7.5 billion, aims to support 3.96 million families with affordable food staples throughout the holy month. Under the Benazir Income Support Program, items such as flour, rice, dal, ghee, sugar, syrup, and milk will be available at prices lower than the market rate, with subsidies on flour and ghee set at Rs. 77 and Rs. 100 per kilogram, respectively. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s decision to augment the Ramadan relief package underscores the government’s commitment to alleviate the burden on vulnerable segments of society during the auspicious month. By expanding the program’s reach and leveraging technology for efficient distribution, the initiative aims to ensure equitable access to essential provisions, fostering a sense of solidarity and support within the community.
