ISLAMABAD: In a letter to the Punjab chief secretary and inspector general of police (IGP), the federal government Monday expressed its reservations about the Punjab government’s shortcomings regarding the firing incident during the long march of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Wazirabad and the non-registration of a case against the incident.
In the letter, the federal government expressed serious concerns over the mismanagement of the top officials of Punjab.
“The federal government wrote a letter to the Punjab government on November 5 last, but the first information report (FIR) of such a high-profile case not registered even after the lapse of more than 36 hours,” the letter said.
“The failure of the Punjab government to get the FIR registered, despite the fact the provincial police personnel were present at the time of the incident, is a sign of the provincial government’s lack of seriousness,” it added.
“The medico-legal examination of the former prime minister has not yet been conducted. It is also worrisome that the provincial government has failed to provide any update,” it added.
“The crime scene was not secured for several hours after the incident, which is again a violation of the established procedures. No official information has been released about the victims or the nature of their injuries,” it bemoaned.
“The release of alleged perpetrator’s ‘confession’ videos shows serious flaws in the investigative process. The above-mentioned failures of the provincial government and its officials are clear evidence of its mishandling of the matter,” it emphasised.
“After the incident, the law and order situation in the province did not improve. Blocking of major highways and roads by small groups of miscreants has paralysed life in Punjab cities and affected inter-district movement,” it added.
“The failure of the provincial police and administration to manage the law and order situation is the violation of the fundamental right to freedom of movement under Article 15 of the Constitution,” it maintained.
