ISLAMABAD, Nov 10 (NNI): The World Bank has released a report about climate change impacts on Pakistan.
According to the World Bank, Pakistan needs huge investments to combat climate change and it needs to reduce the poverty caused by the effects of climate change.
Due to the recent floods, there has been a great disaster in Pakistan, the report stated, adding that climate change impacts may shrink Pakistan’s economy from 18 per cent to 20 per cent by 2050.
The bank stressed Pakistan should change the agro-food system and that a low-carbon transport system should be launched.
It continued: “Climate change-induced disasters could significantly set back Pakistan’s development ambitions and its ability to reduce poverty.
“To foster people-centric climate adaptation and resilience, the country needs fundamental shifts in its development path and policies, requiring substantial investments including international support.”
The recent flooding and humanitarian crisis provide a wake-up call for urgent action to prevent further devastation to the people of Pakistan and its economy due to climate change, said Martin Raiser, World Bank Vice President for South Asia. “Accelerated climate actions can protect the economy from shocks and secure more sustainable and inclusive growth in Pakistan.” NNI
