UNDP/UNAIDS Consultative Session Strengthens Law Enforcement’s Role in Combating HIV Stigma

Lahore,(DL NEWS) The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) convened their fourth consultative session in Lahore, focusing on the crucial task of formulating an engagement strategy for law enforcement agencies to effectively address the escalating issue of HIV stigma and discrimination. With the rise in HIV cases becoming increasingly alarming, all stakeholders, particularly law enforcement, recognize the urgency to collaborate and eradicate the stigma surrounding the disease.

Representatives from various organizations, including the police, Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), BAHAM organization, Khawjasera society, civil society groups, and NGOs, participated in the five-hour session.

Rao Sardar, Inspector General of Railways, emphasized the need to view HIV as a disease rather than stigmatizing individuals. He advocated for a shift in societal focus, promoting understanding and compassion towards those affected.

Azher Hussain, the Operation Manager of Punjab AIDS Control Program, provided detailed insights into the comprehensive measures being implemented to address HIV in the region. He highlighted the progress made in combating the spread of the disease.

Dr. Kaleem Imam skillfully moderated the session, offering a comprehensive overview of the current situation. He stressed the collective efforts required to eliminate HIV-related stigma and discrimination, fostering healthier and more compassionate communities nationwide.

Dr. Sidra from UNDP Punjab underscored the joint efforts of UNDP, UNAIDS, law enforcement agencies, and other key stakeholders in creating a society free from HIV stigma and discrimination. She emphasized the importance of strengthening the engagement strategy and raising awareness to promote understanding and support for affected individuals.

Dr. Summaya, also from UNDP, highlighted the urgent need for collaboration and a united front in the fight against HIV. She emphasized the significance of all sectors joining forces to combat the spread of the disease, promote acceptance, and provide comprehensive support to those impacted.

Inspector General of Punjab, Usman Anwar, expressed his sincere appreciation for the ongoing efforts in tackling HIV stigma and discrimination. He specifically commended the Tahafuz Markaz for its instrumental role in assisting the public and police force members in preventing the transmission of communicable diseases.

Dr. Habib Gilani shared compelling cases illustrating the hardships faced by individuals who conceal their condition and avoid seeking treatment due to the associated stigma. He emphasized the importance of creating awareness and transforming societal attitudes.

The session concluded with a collective agreement that by uniting against HIV stigma and discrimination, society can provide support and acceptance to individuals affected by the disease. Through increased awareness, compassionate understanding, and collaborative action, this challenge can be overcome, leading to a healthier and more inclusive future.
