WASHINGTON: The U.S. Department of State has issued a statement expressing both commendation and concern following Pakistan’s recent elections, emphasizing the need for transparency and respect for democratic principles.
In a statement released Friday, U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed the recent elections in Pakistan, commending the millions of Pakistani citizens who participated in the electoral process. Miller highlighted the significant turnout of women, religious and ethnic minorities, and youth, emphasizing their crucial role in shaping Pakistan’s democratic landscape.
While acknowledging the efforts of Pakistani poll workers, civil society, journalists, and election observers in upholding democratic principles, Miller also expressed concerns over reported restrictions on freedoms of expression, association, and assembly during the electoral process. He condemned instances of electoral violence and attacks on media personnel, urging thorough investigations into allegations of interference and fraud.

Furthermore, the statement underscored the United States’ dedication to bolstering security cooperation to ensure the safety and progress of the Pakistani people. The U.S.-Pakistan Green Alliance Framework was cited as a platform for continued engagement on environmental issues.

The statement concluded with a pledge to foster an environment conducive to peace, democracy, and prosperity in Pakistan, reflecting the shared aspirations of both nations.
