GENEVA: The European Union has called upon Pakistani authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into reported election irregularities following the general elections held on February 8.
In a statement issued by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union, concerns were raised regarding the lack of a level playing field in the electoral process. The statement highlighted issues such as restrictions on political actors, freedom of assembly, and expression both online and offline, as well as allegations of interference in the electoral process.
Despite challenges including security threats and attacks, the EU acknowledged the Pakistani people’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law demonstrated by their participation in the elections. The statement also welcomed the increased number of women registered to vote compared to previous elections.
The EU condemned acts of violence leading up to the elections and urged all parties to use peaceful means to resolve differences. Emphasizing the importance of democratic values, independent media, and civil society, the EU called for inclusive dialogue for the formation of a stable government while respecting human rights.
Pakistan was recognized as an important partner for the EU, with a commitment to continue working together on agreed priorities outlined in the EU-Pakistan Strategic Engagement Plan. Additionally, Pakistan was encouraged to pursue reforms in areas such as human rights, governance, labor rights, and environmental standards to address shortcomings outlined in previous reports.
Conclusion: The EU’s statement underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in Pakistan’s electoral process while reaffirming the commitment to partnership and cooperation between the EU and Pakistan.
