Journalists’ National Nutrition Dialogue Highlights Urgent Need for Maternal Nutrition Reforms

ISLAMABAD: The Journalists’ National Nutrition Dialogue on Advancing Maternal Nutrition took place today at the Health Services Academy (HSA). The event brought together experts, stakeholders, and media professionals to tackle the critical issue of maternal and child nutrition in Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan emphasized the severe impact of malnutrition, noting that 72% of the nation’s disease burden is related to dietary issues. He called for stricter adherence to breastfeeding codes.

Key speakers included Mr. Anteneh Girma Minhas from UNICEF, who highlighted the long-term health benefits of early nutrition. Dr. Raza Qazi from Save the Children International and Prof. Dr. Samina Naeem Khalid from HSA advocated for a comprehensive approach to nutrition and the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and newborns. Dr. Ayesha Shiraz discussed tailored interventions for maternal nutrition, while Prof. Lubna Ejaz stressed the importance of maternal education and identified barriers to breastfeeding.

The dialogue also addressed the enforcement of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. Dr. Zaina Liaqat and Mr. Naveed Asghar called for enhanced enforcement and greater public awareness.

An interactive session led by Mr. Waqar Bhatti and Ms. Eeman Fatima explored the media’s role in promoting maternal nutrition and breastfeeding. The event concluded with a call for increased public awareness, stronger policies, and better collaboration among stakeholders to enhance maternal and child health in Pakistan.
