KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah conducted a detailed inspection of crucial flood defense and drainage systems across Sindh on Tuesday, in anticipation of potential floods. His visit focused on the Indus River’s critical zones, including the Moria Loop Bund, Manchar Basin, and other drainage basins, to ensure readiness against possible flood threats.
Accompanied by Provincial Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro, the CM reviewed the Moria Loop Bund, located on the right bank of the Indus River, 40 miles downstream from the Sukkur Barrage. This bund, a primary defense against flooding, has been under stress due to the river’s increased erosive activity. Emergency repair works have been carried out, with 150,000 feet of stone boulders stocked to fortify the bund. Officials assured the CM that the bund is currently stable and capable of withstanding future floods.
The Suprio Bund, serving as a secondary defense against hill torrents, was another focus of the CM’s inspection. Originally constructed in 1932 and recently extended to protect additional areas, the bund has undergone significant reinforcement. The CM emphasized the need for continued strengthening to ensure the safety of the surrounding cities.
Murad Ali Shah also visited Hamal Lake, a key freshwater body fed by hill torrents from the Khirthar Range. During the 2022 floods, the lake’s water levels surged dramatically, prompting the need for careful monitoring. The CM was briefed on the current situation, which remains stable, and on the procedures for draining excess water from the lake into Manchar Lake via the MNV Drain.
The Main Nara Valley (MNV) Drain, which channels water from the Flood Protective (FP) Bund to Manchar Lake, was identified as crucial in managing flood pressures. The CM directed urgent maintenance work on the MNV Drain to prevent breaches and safeguard the surrounding communities.
During a media briefing, the CM criticized the federal government for its lack of support in funding development projects in Sindh, despite providing electricity bill relief in other provinces. He reiterated his commitment to finding sustainable solutions for affordable electricity in Sindh, emphasizing a focus on solar, wind, and Thar coal power generation.
In a surprise visit to Village Muhammad Khoso in Mehar, District Dadu, the CM was welcomed by a flood-affected woman who expressed gratitude for the construction of elevated houses to protect families from future floods. The Sindh government is working on constructing 2.1 million houses for flood victims, with over 600,000 already completed.
The Sindh Chief Minister’s comprehensive inspection highlights the province’s proactive approach to flood management and disaster preparedness. The government’s focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens while exploring long-term solutions for sustainable development.
