ISLAMABAD:Islamabad’s Shaheen Chowk Underpass recorded a major construction milestone this week as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) announced that more than half of the project has now been completed, with key structural components nearing their final stages.CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, inspected the site on Thursday alongside Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza and senior officials.During the visit, engineers reported that girder installation and pile work have been fully completed — marking the most significant progress update since construction began.Officials further briefed the chairman that more than 70 per cent of the underpass’s barrel structure is now in place. Once this phase is completed, crews will move on to girder launching and roof construction, both critical to preparing the structure for traffic flow.Work on the retaining walls and slip roads is also said to be advancing at pace, with additional development underway on a transom connected to the adjacent bridge. Authorities confirmed that teams are operating round-the-clock to keep the project on schedule.Randhawa expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress and stressed that deadlines must be met without compromise. He also instructed teams to begin preparations for landscaping, digital signage and LED lighting, describing these elements as key to the project’s overall design and commuter experience.Once complete, the Shaheen Chowk Underpass is expected to ease congestion in one of the capital’s busiest corridors, offering uninterrupted travel for residents and students who commute through the area daily.
