LAHORE:Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday took strict notice of the rising crime rate in the province and summoned an emergency law and order meeting, expressing strong displeasure over recent incidents and police performance in several districts.During the meeting, the chief minister shared videos of criminal incidents and reviewed them with participants, directing a strict inquiry and accountability of relevant police officials. She stressed that incidents of murder, robbery, kidnapping and disappearances must be prevented at all costs.
The CM said police had been freed from interference and now must deliver results under a fully merit-based system. She added that political influence in postings had been eliminated and all appointments were being finalized by her personally to ensure transparency. The CM also highlighted that record funding of Rs527 billion had been provided to the police over two years, along with vehicles, weapons and equipment. Despite this, she noted concern over incidents such as thefts, street crimes and drug-related cases, saying even minor crimes must be prevented to ensure public safety.CM Maryam Nawaz further directed the development of pre-emptive policing strategies and reiterated that maintaining law and order remains the government’s top priority, warning that strict action would continue where necessary.
