UNITED NATIONS: Amid escalating global tensions and mounting apprehensions surrounding distrust among major military powers, Pakistan has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the UN Disarmament Commission for the 2024 session. This significant appointment underscores Pakistan’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and its readiness to foster dialogue in addressing pressing disarmament issues on the international stage.
In a landmark decision, Pakistan took the helm of the UN Disarmament Commission during the commencement of its 2024 session. Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him and pledged to uphold the principles of impartiality and cooperation throughout his tenure.

“I assure you that – in keeping with Pakistan’s ethos and tradition of multilateral diplomacy – I will be an honest broker and a facilitator of dialogue,” stated Ambassador Jadoon, emphasizing his commitment to fostering a conducive environment for constructive discussions among member states.
The appointment of Pakistan to lead the Commission’s deliberations reflects the confidence of UN member states in the country’s diplomatic capabilities and its dedication to advancing the disarmament agenda on the global stage.
Addressing the significance of the Disarmament Commission’s role, Ambassador Jadoon highlighted its function as a vital forum for deliberating on disarmament issues, distinct from other bodies within the UN framework. He emphasized the need for flexible attitudes and mutual respect to foster consensus-based solutions in addressing complex security challenges. The presence of Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, underscored the importance of the Commission’s mandate in promoting global peace and security.
As the world grapples with growing geopolitical tensions, Ambassador Jadoon reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to leveraging the UN disarmament machinery to navigate through challenging times, emphasizing the importance of political will and cooperation in achieving tangible progress.
Pakistan’s election as the Chairman of the UN Disarmament Commission for the 2024 session marks a significant milestone in the global disarmament efforts. With a pledge to serve as an impartial facilitator of dialogue, Pakistan aims to contribute to fostering consensus and addressing pressing security challenges facing the international community.
