RAWALPINDI: In a distressing incident that unfolded on the 28th of January 2024, a convoy of Pakistani Peacekeepers, on a humanitarian mission, faced a targeted ambush in Abyei, a region disputed between Sudan and South Sudan. Inter Services Public Relations ( ISPR) said in a statement that the convoy was en route to escort two local patients to a hospital when it came under a sudden and coordinated attack by militants.
The Pakistani peacekeepers responded with exemplary courage and efficiency, successfully repelling the assailants and compelling them to withdraw, it added. However, this valiant defense did not come without a cost. Sepoy Muhammad Tariq, a resident of Badin, Sindh, displayed extraordinary bravery but tragically embraced martyrdom during the exchange of fire. Additionally, four individuals, including two officers, sustained injuries in the incident.

The incident underscores the unwavering commitment and professionalism of Pakistan’s peacekeeping contingents, who have consistently distinguished themselves in challenging environments. The sacrifice of Sepoy Muhammad Tariq brings the total number of Pakistani peacekeepers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty to 181.
Pakistan, reeling from this loss, reiterates its dedication to its role as a responsible member of the international community. The country expresses its resolve to continue contributing actively to the cause of global peace and stability under the auspices of the United Nations. The international community is urged to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices made by peacekeepers in their pursuit of a more secure and harmonious world.
