LAHORE:In a significant step toward addressing sexual violence and supporting survivors, the Punjab Health Department for Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education in collaboration with UN Women and the support of U.S. Mission Pakistan, inaugurated the Anti Rape Crisis Cells (ARCC) at Mian Munshi Hospital and Services Hospital, Lahore.Under the Prevention and Protection of Women from Violence through Enhanced Access to Justice and Services Access to Justice project, funded by US government’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), UN Women has established similar facilities in Karachi, Multan, and Islamabad. This demonstrates a strong commitment to justice, comprehensive care, and survivor empowerment.UN Women Pakistan Deputy Country Representative, Jacqui Ketunuti, emphasized the critical role of Anti-Rape Crisis Cells in offering integrated services to survivors. He stated, “Anti-Rape Crisis Cells serve as essential pillars in our collective efforts to combat sexual violence and ensure the rights and the well-being of rape survivors.  By providing consolidated services and support, these cells play a pivotal role in empowering survivors to reclaim their lives and seek justice.”U.S. Consul General in Lahore Kristin Hawkins reaffirmed the United States’ strong support for Pakistan’s efforts to address sexual violence and protect survivor rights. “The United States remains steadfast in our partnership with Pakistan to support survivors of sexual violence and provide the timely resources they need. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands who endure these crimes every year,” said Consul General Hawkins.Established under the Anti-Rape (Trial and Investigation) Act 2021, the Tahaffuz program provides the framework for these Crisis Cells, which are designed to address sexual violence comprehensively and help survivors heal and pursue justice. The ARCC at Services Hospital will serve as a 24/7 resource center, offering a range of services including medical care, psychological support, legal aid, and counselling, all in a secure environment. It follows the successful implementation of Pakistan’s first-ever Anti-Rape Crisis Cell in Karachi and Punjab’s first ARCC in Multan, both launched last year with the support of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement and technical assistance from UN Women.
