ISLAMABAD: Newly surfaced CCTV footage has shed light on the gas explosion that occurred at the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s air conditioning (AC) gas plant, providing crucial details about the incident.The explosion took place on Tuesday in the basement canteen, where the AC gas plant is located. The blast injured at least 12 people, and one of the injured later succumbed to their injuries. The powerful explosion sent shockwaves through the Supreme Court building, triggering an immediate emergency response. Both the Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) and a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) team were quickly deployed to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.According to the IGP, the explosion occurred at approximately 10:55 am due to a gas leak in the AC system. The injured individuals, including several AC technicians, were rushed to nearby hospitals. Three were taken to PIMS Hospital, while the remaining nine were transported to Polyclinic Hospital. Two of the injured are in critical condition. One technician suffered severe burns, with nearly 80 percent of his body affected.Preliminary investigations, along with expert assessments, confirmed that the explosion was caused by the gas leak and not an explosive device. The IGP noted that the gas leak had been ongoing for several days before the explosion occurred during maintenance work on the AC unit.Authorities have launched an inquiry to investigate potential lapses in safety protocols and maintenance procedures at the facility.
