Lahore:Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, paid rich tribute to the police martyrs of the GPO Chowk tragedy on its 18th anniversary, stating that Punjab Police salutes those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. The IG Punjab said that on this day in 2008, 16 officers and officials of Punjab Police laid down their precious lives. Among those martyred in the GPO Chowk incident were 02 ASIs and 14 police personnel. Dr. Usman Anwar said that the memories of the police martyrs of the GPO Chowk tragedy will always remain alive in our hearts, and that every soldier of Lahore Police stands as a frontline force for the protection of the country and the nation. He further stated that the brave officers and officials who embraced martyrdom are a valuable asset of Lahore Police. Employment has been provided in the police department to the families of the GPO Chowk martyrs, and all possible resources are being utilized for the welfare and well-being of the heirs of police martyrs. He said that the sacrifices of police martyrs are a guiding light for all of us.The spokesperson for Punjab Police, while sharing details, said that those martyred in the GPO Chowk tragedy include ASIs Sheesh Ahmed and Raftaaj Ahmed, and Constables Riaz Ahmed, Naim-ur-Rehman, Asghar Ali, Muhammad Yaqoob, Muhammad Mansha, Zaheer Shaukat, Ijaz Ahmed, and Shahid Ghafoor, who attained the rank of martyrdom. In the same incident, Constables Muhammad Asghar, Muhammad Saleem, Manzoor Ahmed, Muhammad Ehsan, Muhammad Asif, and Shahbaz Ahmed also embraced martyrdom.
