LAHORE: Punjab Police issued more than 2.65 million driving licences during the current year while intensifying enforcement of traffic laws across the province.According to a spokesperson, 2,556,602 challans were issued for various traffic violations, with fines exceeding Rs5.44 billion imposed on violators.As part of the crackdown, over 30,000 smoke-emitting vehicles were challaned, 5,358 vehicles were impounded at police stations, and fitness certificates of 28 vehicles were confiscated.Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Abdul Kareem directed officers to continue strict action against traffic law violators and ensure effective implementation of amended traffic laws, reforms and modern systems. He emphasised that indiscriminate action must be taken against violations, adding that Station House Officers (SHOs) and Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) should adopt coordinated measures to reduce traffic congestion and prevent road accidents.The IG Punjab further ordered continued crackdowns against overloading, over-speeding, underage driving and one-way violations.
He said Punjab Police are also providing driving training to citizens through 127 driving training schools across the province, and directed authorities to take more effective measures for recovery of pending traffic challans.
