KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that the JI referendum on electricity bills that include irrelevant and unjust charges will represent the will of Karachiites and the JI will devise its strategy accordingly. The JI leader announced this at a press conference held at Idara Noor-e-Haq, the JI Karachi headquarters, here on Thursday morning.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the three-day referendum will commence today (Friday) and the party’s next course of action will be announced afterwards.
He said that referendum will be held outside mosques in the city after Friday prayers. The referendum will also take place at educational institutes, markets and other public places, he said, adding that online platforms will also be used to engage masses for the three-day referendum.
Engr Naeemur Rehman said that all segments of the society, including religious scholars, lawyers, traders, industrialists, labourers will be approached in connection with the referendum.
He said that the JI will fight for the rights of Karachiites inside the courts and on roads. All available forums and options under the ambit of the law and the constitution will be utilized. Talking about the demands, he said that Karachiites want to get the municipality charges and fake fuel adjustment charges exclude of the electricity bills.
He also demanded the government to force the KE to pay Rs50 billion, it had held under the head of clawback, to its consumers. He demanded of the government to revoke the license of the KE over grave violations of the agreement with the state by the private company.
He said that the JI has also been demanding a forensic audit of the KE accounts in order to unearthed the discrepancies by the shady company’s management.
