The Interior Ministry has recommended the deployment of the army as a quick response force in the general elections scheduled to be held on Feb 8.

The caretaker federal cabinet approved the summary.

Pakistan Army troops, along with Rangers and Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel, will undertake election duties following the approval of the Interior Ministry’s summary by the caretaker federal cabinet.

This decision was prompted by the acute shortage of security personnel, leading authorities to enlist the assistance of the army for the upcoming elections.

Punjab, recognised as the election battleground in the country, grapples with a deficit of 92,000 security personnel at polling stations.

In parallel, the Karachi Police is confronted with a shortage of 14,300 security personnel, including women officers.
